PBS challenge attracts Millennial competitors | Amarillo Globe-News

What’s the big idea? Combining brains, puzzle solving and social media to attract Millennials to fundraise for Panhandle PBS, that’s what.

The third annual Big Idea Challenge, a four-week fundraising campaign, will kick off at 5 p.m. April 1 (no fooling) at the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce.

It’s still not too late to get involved in this year’s challenge by registering online at www.bigideatexas.org.

“The Big Idea Challenge is a new fundraiser idea to reach younger generations of viewers and appeal to Millennials,” said Jayson Boyett, this year’s marketing director.

Teams of six to 10 work together to solve puzzles each week in hopes of gaining 400 points toward the 1,400 points needed to participate in the finale April 29, beginning on the roof of the downtown Happy State Bank building.

The event works much like the TV reality game show “The Amazing Race,” with contestants receiving one point for each dollar raised as well as the chance to add points through the challenge.

The usual PBS financial backers skew toward the senior citizen age group, Boyett said, and the local PBS affiliate is interested in getting the 20- to 40-year-old demographic involved.

In the past, teams have found creative ways to best their competitors, including ceasing radio communications during the finale so others wouldn’t know their strategies. Last year’s challenge raised $34,000.

“We were looking for something more than a pledge drive,” Boyett said. “This builds social interaction and employee team building.”
